Plant your trees and keep them alive!

Preparing the ground for planting a tree in winter involves several crucial steps to ensure the tree's successful establishment and growth. First, choose an appropriate location with well-draining soil, sufficient sunlight, and enough space for the tree to mature. Clear the area of any debris, weeds, or grass to prevent competition for nutrients and water. Mark the spot where the tree will be planted, ensuring it is away from any structures or other trees that might interfere with its growth.

Next, dig a hole that is twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball of the tree. This provides ample space for the roots to spread and establishes good soil contact. Loosen the soil at the bottom and sides of the hole to promote root penetration and aeration. If the soil is particularly poor or compacted, consider amending it with organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to improve its structure and fertility. Ensure that the soil temperature is not frozen; if it is, wait for a warmer day when the ground is workable.

Finally, position the tree in the hole, making sure that the root flare (where the roots meet the trunk) is at or slightly above ground level to prevent deep planting, which can cause root suffocation. Backfill the hole with the excavated soil, gently firming it around the roots to eliminate air pockets. Water the tree thoroughly to settle the soil and provide moisture for the roots. Mulch around the base of the tree with a 2-4 inch layer of organic mulch, keeping it away from the trunk to prevent rot. Mulching helps retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and reduce weed growth. For further protection use a barrier like a tree ring or railroad sleepers. This will protect against weeds and soil erosion. In order to protect the small tree from whippersnappers or lawnmowers make sure the barrier is raised for added protection.

Regularly check the tree for stability and water as needed (but don’t overwater in winter), especially during dry periods, to support its establishment through the winter months.
