Syntenta is releasing Victrato® a long awaited and often discussed protection for cereals from crown-rot. The APVMA is currently reviewing Victrato® for registration and is expected to hand down its decision very soon. While this is happening, it is important to consider preparing ahead in order to take advantage of this crop saving product.

Syngenta aptly refers to Victrato® as a “powerful tool” in the fight against disease working alongside your current management practices. Victrato® has been developed for Australian conditions and is designed to move through the plant for greater protection.

Victrato® offers wheat and barley growers effective protection against the impacts of fursarium crown rot. Crown rot is a devastating disease impacting Australian producers with losses of over $404 million per year. (GRDC Factsheet Oct 2018). The Crown Rust species of the fungus, Fursarium, restricts water flow and nutrients to the growing cereal head. The problem is compounded with moisture and heat stress which occurs during critical stages of growth resulting in pinched grains or, even, heads with no grain.

Victrato® works by delivering its active ingredient to the entire plant, targeting its greatest protection to the crown and roots. The active ingredient: Cyclobutrifluram as Tymirium® technology supresses the disease starting in the roots. Further to the effectiveness of Victrato®, it is safe to use and requires no special PPE and is safe for workers using the product.

That being said, Victrato® is part of the SDHI group of chemicals. To make sure that the product works best for your farm and to protect the group so that it remains effective and does not develop resistance, it is critical that growers and industry are aware of and follow the CropLife resistance management guidelines. In order to purchase Victrato®, growers must know and agree that they understand the steps and will adhere to recommendations for use.  For this to happen, growers will need a unique registration number. To register for your number visit the Syngenta website at www.syngenta.com.au/victrato.
