Paraquat Regulation Change

Updated: Oct 30

What it means to you and your farm

Paraquat has been a staple of crop protection for over 60 years, however, recent studies indicating a possible link between Paraquat and Parkinson’s disease have moved regulators to propose changes to the use and distribution of Paraquat and Diquat. In Western Australia the conversation is taking it further by suggesting an outright ban on the products.

After a period of public consultation, the APVMA is still evaluating the health implications and use of Paraquat and Diquat. This means that further changes could be introduced in the future.

Tara Rural Supplies and Condamine Seeds and Tyres will continue to stock these products while we are able to do so in keeping with regulations and safety standards. Currently, however, there are new standards when it comes to application and use of Paraquat and Diquat. Here is a quick summary:

Rates will change in the following ways.

-Maximum rate 800ml/ha of Paraquat for pre sowing

-Maximum rate of 400/ha of Paraquat spray topping

-Maximum rate for Spray seed 800ml with registration only prior to crop establishment.

Changes will also be made to registrations. The list of changes is comprehensive and is specific to several factors. With that in mind, we recommend having a read of the label suggestions from the APVMA. You can find them on the APVMA website at the link below.

We will continue to provide these products under the most up-to-date regulations and safety standards. For more information give Andy or Jeremy a call to discuss Paraquat and Diquat.
