Faecal Seeding
Faecal Seeding is a unique technique that could be of some value to dryer regions, such as ours, in Southern Queensland. Faecal seeding is an option for plant propagation, particularly for species with hard or dormant seeds like pasture seeds. This process simulates natural scarification, where the seed coat is softened or partially broken down by stomach acids and enzymes, making it easier for the seed to germinate. When mixed with loose lick or supplements, the seeds are consumed by livestock, and undigested seed passes through the animal into cowpats on the ground, spread over the paddock wherever cattle travel and camp.
Faecal seeding is a great method for restoring grazable paddocks. The most effective seeds for this process are seeds that have a dormant process or those who have hard seeds that will withstand the digestion process. These seeds include Legumes and Grasses such as lucerne, Desmanthus, and medics.
Faecal seeding capitalizes on the natural digestive processes of animals to improve seed germination and promote healthy pasture growth. Trials, including a 2021 trial in Wandoan, found that the cost of faecal seeding, counting monetary costs as well as investment of time, is significantly less than traditional seeding methods. This is countered with fecal seeding being a less reliable method than traditional methods. This method of seeding will see a sporadic, less evenly dispersed seeding. Those who use this method will most likely find that the seeds are more concentrated around areas where cattle drink, feed, and camp. The ease of this method combined with the cost effectiveness could make it a great option for your grazing.
It is a worthwhile consideration for seeding in our region. If you want to know more about this method of seeding and the best seed options, contact our Agronomists to have a chat about the best options for you.
